Ode to a Dear Book Club Friend

8/25/2016

I lost another dear book club friend to cancer today, that insidious disease that robs us of our hair, robs us of our bodily functions, steals our pride and takes us from our families.

I will remember her for many reasons, for her always cheerful demeanor and her intelligent questions and opinions, but mostly I will remember her for bringing a wonderful book to my attention and thus a book for selection in our 'From Cover to Cover' Book Discussion Group,  THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS by Rebecca Skloot.

There was a segment on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood that featured the Lacks family and told the story of how Henrietta's cancerous cell line, known as HeLa, led to medical breakthroughs that changed lives forever.  Her son is a producer of that show.  Thanks to my special friend, our book discussion was enriched by watching the family drama unfold before us.

Oprah Winfrey will star as Henrietta's daughter in the upcoming movie.  I will think of my friend and fondly reminisce.
